Hope that’s Bigger than Change ~ by Carla Pollard

“Be still and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10)

Looking through a local antique shop I was happily surprised to see various knick-knacks identical to some that decorated my grandmother’s home years and years ago. As I rummaged through the antiquated styles and fads I couldn’t help but reminisce.

I thought about places I used to visit and old friends with whom I’d lost touch. I remembered family members and longed to see the faces of those loved ones who had passed on. Oh, how things change!

Do you ever think about that? About how things change? Our children grow up and leave home. We grow older. Jobs change. People move here and there, coming and going, popping in and out of our lives. Children are born. Loved ones die. Nothing seems certain. Everything is constantly changing.

ChangeI don’t know about you but the older I get the more I long for things to stay the same. How comforting and satisfying that would be! But that’s not life. Life means change. Even though our lives change I’m glad to know through Jesus we can have a hope that’s bigger than change. We can take comfort because our God never changes.

“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.” (James 1:17, KJV)

God is constant. God is consistent. He never changes. He’s always the same.

”For I am the LORD, I change not…” (Malachi 3: 6, KJV)

God gives us hope in this changing world because of who He is. As we understand His very being, His character, we can trust Him. We can know He’s well able to help us. Here are just a few comforting characteristics of our God we can cling to when the ebb and flow of life leaves us perplexed:Hope 3

  1. God is Omniscient. Simply put that means He knows everything. He sees everything – before it happens God already knows it will happen. (Psalm 139:1-6).
  2. God is Omnipresent. He’s everywhere all at once. We are always in His presence. (Psalm 139: 7-10).
  3. God is Omnipotent. That means He’s all-powerful – the Almighty One. (Ex. 6:3). And,
  4. God is Faithful. “Faithful is he that calleth you” (I Thessalonians 5:24). “But the Lord is faithful, who shall stablish you and keep you from evil” (II Thessalonians 3:3).

I’m so thankful the God who knows everything, who is present everywhere, who is all powerful, is faithful to us.

Is a child moving away?

Have you lost your job?

Has tragedy or illness struck your family?

Are you being tossed about with worry and concern because of uncertainty?

Be still and know that I am God.”

It may seem out of control for you, but the One who never changes has it under His control. When we learn to rest in Him, He’ll see us through whatever change may come.
